Business Days Calculator: Count Working Days Between Any Two Dates
When someone says "delivery in 5 business days" or "the contract runs 30 working days," they don't mean calendar days. They mean business days—Monday through Friday, excluding weekends. Knowing exactly how many working days fall between two dates is essential for deadlines, shipping, contracts, and payroll.

Business Days vs. Calendar Days: Why It Matters
| Scenario | Calendar Days | Business Days | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-week sprint | 14 days | 10 days | 4 weekend days excluded |
| "30-day notice" (contract) | 30 days | ~22 days | Varies by calendar |
| 90-day probation | 90 days | ~64 days | ~26 weekend days |
| Q1 2026 (Jan–Mar) | 90 days | 64 days | Weekends excluded |
When business days matter:
- Project management — Sprint planning, release dates, milestones
- Legal/contracts — Notice periods, response deadlines, escrow
- Shipping — "5–7 business days" delivery estimates
- Payroll — Biweekly (10 working days) or monthly pay periods
- Loan processing — Underwriting and approval timelines
Using a business days calculator avoids costly mistakes from assuming "30 days" means 30 calendar days.

How Leap Years Affect Business Day Counts
2026 is not a leap year (divisible by 4 but not by 100 without 400). February 2026 has 28 days.
Leap years change counts when your date range crosses February 29:
- Non-leap year (e.g., 2026): Feb has 28 days → 4 weekdays in Feb
- Leap year (e.g., 2024, 2028): Feb has 29 days → 5 weekdays in Feb
For a range like Jan 15–Mar 15:
- In 2026: One extra day doesn’t change the business-day count dramatically
- In a leap year: Feb 29 adds one more calendar day; if it’s a weekday, you get one more business day
Our calculator handles leap years automatically—no extra math needed.
Project Planning: Use Business Days, Not Calendar Days
Sprint planning example:
A 2-week sprint is 10 business days. If you start Monday, Feb 16, 2026, you have 10 working days before the sprint ends. Using calendar days would overcount and distort velocity.
Contract deadlines:
"Respond within 14 business days" means 14 weekdays. From Monday, that’s about 3 weeks on the calendar. From Friday, it can stretch to nearly 4 weeks.
Shipping estimates:
"5–7 business days" excludes weekends. An order placed Friday afternoon may not ship until Monday, so the first "business day" is Monday.
Payroll cycles:
Biweekly pay = 10 business days per period. Monthly pay = roughly 21–23 business days, depending on the month.
Tips for Accurate Business Day Calculations
1. Define Your Week
Most tools assume Sat–Sun weekends. If your business uses other days (e.g., Friday–Saturday), you’ll need a custom setup or to adjust the result manually.
2. Account for Holidays
Standard business day calculators exclude weekends only. For legal or financial use, you may need to exclude public holidays (e.g., New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving). Some industries use custom holiday calendars.
3. Check Inclusive vs. Exclusive
- Inclusive: Jan 1–Jan 5 = 5 days (both start and end count)
- Exclusive: Jan 1–Jan 5 = 4 days (only days between)
Our calculator counts inclusively—both the start and end dates are included in the result.
4. Mind Time Zones
For cross-timezone work, agree on which time zone defines "day 1." A date in Tokyo can be a different calendar day in New York.
Common Business Day Benchmarks
| Period | Approx. Business Days | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 1 week | 5 | Short deadlines |
| 2 weeks | 10 | Sprints, pay periods |
| 1 month | 21–23 | Monthly reviews, billing |
| 1 quarter | 64–66 | Quarterly planning |
| 1 year | 260–262 | Annual planning |
Variation comes from month length and how weekends and holidays fall.
