Why Your Life Starts at Day 0, Not Day 1
Here's a question that divides people as fiercely as tabs vs. spaces: Is the day you were born Day 1 or Day 0?
Most life-tracking apps call your birthday "Day 1." It feels intuitive. It's your first day, after all.
But it's wrong.
The Case for Day 0
Think about it this way: on the day you were born, how many complete days had you lived?
Zero.
You hadn't completed a single day yet. You were starting your first day — but you hadn't finished it. Just like when you're born, you're zero years old. Not one.
This isn't pedantry. It's how the entire world already works.
Age Works This Way
When a baby is born, we say they are 0 years old. They don't turn 1 until they've completed a full year of life. Nobody celebrates a newborn's "first birthday" in the delivery room.
The same logic applies to days:

Mathematics Agrees
In mathematics, counting from zero is natural. An interval of n days starting from Day 0 gives you days 0 through n−1 — exactly n days. Clean. No off-by-one errors.
If you start from Day 1, the interval from Day 1 to Day n contains... n days? Or n−1? The fence-post problem rears its head immediately.
Zero-based indexing eliminates an entire category of counting errors.
Computer Science Got It Right
Every programmer knows: arrays start at 0. Not because it's arbitrary, but because an index represents an offset from the origin.
Your birthday is the origin of your life. The offset is zero. Day 0.
The legendary computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra wrote about this in his famous note "Why numbering should start at zero" (1982). His argument was elegant: when you use zero-based numbering, the subscript range for a sequence of length N is simply 0 ≤ i < N. No ambiguity. No fencepost errors.

Time Zones and Calendars Do Too
ISO 8601, the international standard for date and time representation, defines midnight as 00:00:00 — not 01:00:00. The first second of a new day is second zero. The first minute is minute zero. The first hour is hour zero.
Even the Gregorian calendar almost got it right. There's no Year 0 in the common era, and this omission has caused centuries of confusion in astronomical calculations. The astronomical year numbering system fixed this by adding Year 0 between 1 BC and 1 AD.
The Philosophical Angle
Day 0 isn't just technically correct. It's meaningful.
Your birthday is the origin — the reference point from which everything is measured. It's not a day you experienced in the same way as any other. You didn't wake up that morning and decide what to do. You arrived.
Day 0 is genesis. The big bang of you.
Day 1 is your first full day of conscious existence — the first day you completed, the first sunrise-to-sunset cycle you lived through entirely.
There's something beautiful about that distinction. Day 0 is potential. Day 1 is when the story truly begins.

Or think of a rocket launch: "T minus zero" is the moment of liftoff. Not T minus one. Zero is when it all starts.

The Off-By-One Error in Life
If you use Day 1 for your birthday, every day counter in your life is off by one. Your "10,000th day" celebration would actually happen on the day you've completed 9,999 days.
That might seem trivial, but it compounds:
- Milestone tracking: Your "Day 10,000" party is a day early
- Age calculations: Inconsistency between "days old" and "years old"
- Date math:
birthday + 365 daysshould equal your first birthday (Day 365), not Day 366
Zero-indexing keeps everything aligned. Day 365 = 1 year old. Day 730 = 2 years old. Day 10,000 = exactly 10,000 days completed.
