About

Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Vladimir Lenin, was a Russian revolutionary, politician and political theorist. He was the first head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 until his death in 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death. As the Bolsheviks' founder, Lenin led the October Revolution, which established the world's first communist state and short-lived soviet democracy. His government won the Russian Civil War and created a one-party state under the Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, his developments to the ideology are called Leninism.

Before Fame

Lenin embraced revolutionary politics after his brother's execution and was expelled from university for his activism. He earned a law degree and became a prominent Marxist activist before his exile to Siberia.

Trivia

His original surname was Ulyanov, but he adopted the pseudonym 'Lenin' early in his revolutionary career. He was a prolific writer and theorist, developing Marxist ideology into what is known as Leninism. Lenin's embalmed body is still on public display in a mausoleum in Moscow's Red Square.

Family Life

Lenin married Nadezhda Krupskaya in 1898, who was also a revolutionary and a close political associate. They did not have any children.
