Before gaining international recognition, Parajanov studied at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow and began his professional film directing career in 1954, initially working within the constraints of Soviet cinema.

Parajanov considered all his films made before 1965 to be 'garbage'. Soviet authorities used his alleged bisexuality as a pretext for increased scrutiny and persecution. He was known for his vibrant and often eccentric personal style, which extended to his filmmaking. His films are characterized by their rich visual imagery, often drawing inspiration from folklore, mythology, and folk art.

Parajanov was married twice. His first marriage was to Nigyar Shabanova, with whom he had a son, Suren. His second marriage was to Elena Martirosyan.
