Before his involvement in terrorism, Salah Abdeslam worked for the Brussels public transport company STIB-MIVB for two years. He then drifted into petty crime and unemployment before assisting his brother in running a café-bar in Molenbeek.

He is the only surviving member of the 10-man unit that carried out the 2015 Paris attacks. His family was of Moroccan origin but held French nationality. He drove members of the terror cell returning from Syria via the migrant route. He maintained his right to silence for several years after his arrest before speaking during his trial.

Salah Abdeslam's family was of Moroccan origin and held French nationality. His brother, Brahim Abdeslam, was one of the suicide bombers in the Paris attacks.
