About

Notable Trials

Before Fame

Before his rise in the Nazi Party, Hess served as an infantryman in World War I, earning the Iron Cross, and later studied geopolitics at university. He joined the Nazi Party in 1920 and participated in the failed Beer Hall Putsch.

Trivia

Hess's solo flight to Scotland in 1941 was an unauthorized mission that surprised even Hitler. During his trial at Nuremberg, Hess claimed to be suffering from amnesia, which he later admitted was a ruse. After his death, the Spandau Prison where he served his sentence was demolished to prevent it from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine. His gravestone bore the inscription "Ich habs gewagt" ("I dared to do it"), which became a focal point for neo-Nazi demonstrations.

Family Life

Rudolf Hess was married to Ilse Pröhl. They had one son, Wolf Rüdiger Hess. His family actively campaigned for his early release from prison.
