Michel Jean Legrand (February 24, 1932 – January 26, 2019) was a French composer, arranger, conductor, jazz pianist, and singer. He wrote more than 200 film and television scores and many songs. His work for Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort earned early Oscar nominations, and he won Academy Awards for The Windmills of Your Mind (The Thomas Crown Affair), Summer of '42, and Yentl. Born in Paris to a musical family, he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and remained active as a performer until his death in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
