Barry Krischer

Barry Krischer served as the State Attorney for Palm Beach County, Florida from 1993 to 2009. He oversaw the initial prosecution of the Epstein case after the Palm Beach Police Department completed its investigation identifying at least 36 underage victims. Critics alleged that Krischer's office treated the case too leniently, presenting the matter to a grand jury that returned a single charge of solicitation of prostitution rather than the more serious charges recommended by police. Palm Beach Police Chief Michael Reiter took the unusual step of writing to Krischer expressing frustration with the lenient handling. The case was subsequently referred to the FBI and U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta. A grand jury investigation by a Krischer successor later found he had acted within his discretion, though the decision remained controversial.
